My Mathematics Experiences

On this page you will read about my mathematics learning experiences from grades Kindergarten through twelfth grade. I will also talk about my glows and grows of math, or in other words my strengths and weaknesses.

My Experiences

There are so many memories that I can go through to share, but here are two specific ones that I think about very often as I continue my journey of becoming a teacher.

Multiplication

One memory I have of learning mathematics in school was in elementary school when multiplication was first introduced.  I remember practicing my multiplication facts very consistently through worksheets or timed tests.  While this helped me memorize the facts, it sometimes felt stressful because the focus was mostly focused on speed rather than understanding.  This experience showed me how important it is for teachers to balance practice with conceptual understanding so that students do not feel overwhelmed.

High School Math Procedures

Another memory I have is from high school when my teacher took the time to explain why mathematical procedures worked instead of simply showing us the steps.  This really helped me understand the reasoning behind the math and made the subject much more interesting.  That experience taught me that when students understand the "why" behind math, they are more likely to stay engaged and feel confident in their abilities.

My Glows and Grows

Glows

- I have always been strong in recognizing patterns and solving step-by-step problems in mathematics.

- I am good at staying organized and carefully working through problems to avoid mistakes

- I currently have a positive mathematical mindset and believe that effort and practice can improve my abilities

Grows

- On area I could improve is feeling more confident when solving compels to unfamiliar problems

- Another area I can continue to grow in is explaining my mathematical thinking clearly to others
